Fandoghi Pistachios (Round)

Round 28/30 & 30/32 — Iran's volume variety

Fandoghi, sometimes traded as Round or Hazelnut-type, is the most widely planted pistachio in Iran and the volume grade of the trade. Counts run 28/30 and 30/32 per ounce against Akbari's 18/20, so you are buying a greater number of smaller, rounder nuts per kilogram — and paying materially less for them. Specification otherwise matches the family: moisture ≤ 6%, closed shells kept low, foreign matter ≤ 0.5%, and aflatoxin controlled to destination limits with the same seriousness the whole category demands. The round shape is the visual signature and the reason the trade name distinguishes it from the long varieties.

Buy Fandoghi wherever pistachios are eaten rather than displayed: roasted and salted snack packs, bulk and bin retail, ice cream and confectionery, bakery and dessert work, and food-service. The economics are compelling because the eating quality is not meaningfully different from the long varieties — you are giving up kernel size, which matters in a gift box and matters not at all in a bowl. It is also the sensible base for a programme that runs a premium Akbari line alongside it, since the two serve genuinely different shelf positions. Where Fandoghi is the wrong choice is a clear premium pack competing on visible nut size, where a round 30/32 next to a competitor's long 20/22 will lose the comparison regardless of how it tastes. CBIL supplies against certification of size count, moisture, closed-shell percentage, aflatoxin and microbiology, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms.

Fandoghi Pistachios (Round) — buyer questions

Does Fandoghi taste different from Akbari?

Not meaningfully. The varieties differ in kernel size and shape rather than in flavour, and roasted and salted in a bowl most people could not separate them. What you give up buying Fandoghi is visible nut size, which is worth real money in a gifting pack and nothing at all in a snack pack.

Why is it the most planted Iranian variety?

Yield and hardiness. Fandoghi crops more heavily and copes better with the growing conditions across the Iranian pistachio belt than the long varieties do, so growers plant it and the supply base is deep. That depth is also why it is the most liquid and reliably available grade for a volume programme.

Should I run Fandoghi and Akbari together?

Many buyers do, and it works well. Fandoghi carries the volume and the everyday shelf position; Akbari serves gifting and premium retail where size sells. Pricing them as one range rather than as substitutes makes the logic clear to your customers, and it protects the Akbari margin.

What about kernels rather than in-shell?

Kernels — whole, splits and green pieces — are a separate market priced on a different basis, and they are what confectionery, ice cream and bakery buyers actually want since the shell is useless to them. Green pieces in particular are bought for colour in pistachio ice cream and pastry. Tell us the application and we will quote the right form.
