CBIL brokers solvent-extracted soybean meal in the two grades feed mills buy against: hi-pro at 46% minimum protein with crude fibre held to around 3.5%, and standard 44% meal where hulls are added back and fibre runs nearer 7%. The difference is not cosmetic — hi-pro is dehulled, so it delivers more digestible protein and less fibre per tonne, which is why it is specified for broilers, layers, young pigs and aquafeed where energy density and gut load matter. Standard 44% meal is the sensible economic choice for ruminants and grower rations that tolerate the fibre. Beyond protein and fibre, the specifications that decide whether a cargo is fit are moisture at 12–12.5% maximum, fat, ash, sand and silica, and urease activity of roughly 0.05–0.30 mg N/g/min: too high and the meal is under-toasted, leaving trypsin inhibitor that suppresses growth; too low and it has been over-toasted, damaging lysine availability. Protein solubility in KOH (73–85%) is the cross-check we ask for on the same COA.
Buy meal rather than whole beans when you are compounding feed and have no crush capacity — you take the protein directly, you avoid the oil you cannot sell, and the freight per unit of protein is better. Buy beans instead if you crush, or if your market needs a Non-GMO/IP claim, which is harder and dearer to certify back through meal. What is the real difference between 46% hi-pro and 44% soybean meal?
Hi-pro is dehulled: you get 46% protein with crude fibre around 3.5%. Standard 44% meal has hulls added back, so fibre runs nearer 7%. For broilers, layers, young pigs and aquafeed the extra digestible protein and lower gut load usually justify the premium. For ruminants and grower rations that handle fibre well, 44% is normally the better buy per unit of usable protein — run the numbers on your own formulation before paying up.
Why does urease activity matter on the COA?
It tells you whether the meal was toasted correctly. Urease above roughly 0.30 mg N/g/min indicates under-toasting, leaving trypsin inhibitor that depresses growth. Very low urease points to over-toasting, which damages lysine availability — the meal still assays 46% protein but performs worse in the bird. Read urease alongside KOH protein solubility (73–85%); the pair catches both failure modes.
Should I buy meal or crush my own beans?
If you have no crush capacity, buy meal. You take the protein directly, avoid carrying oil you cannot sell, and freight per unit of protein is better. Crushing only makes sense when you can place both the oil and the meal, or when you need Non-GMO/IP status, which is materially harder to certify through meal than through beans.
What moisture should I contract on soybean meal?
12–12.5% maximum. Above that you are paying for water and inviting caking and mould in bulk holds or bagged stacks, particularly on long CIF voyages into humid discharge ports. We contract the ceiling and have it certified at load port rather than discovering it on arrival.
