Pakistan's volume long grain — 5% to 25% broken

IRRI-6 is the workhorse of Pakistani rice exports and it is bought on one question: delivered cost per tonne at an acceptable broken percentage. Average milled length runs 6.2–6.6 mm, non-aromatic, contracted at 5%, 10%, 15% or 25% broken with moisture ≤ 14%, chalky grains ≤ 6%, damaged and discoloured ≤ 2% and purity ≥ 95%. Broken percentage is the price lever and the specification most often stretched — a lot sold as 10% that lands at 16% is the standard dispute in this trade, and it happens because chalky kernels are structurally weak and continue breaking through milling, handling and the voyage. That is why chalk deserves as much attention as the headline broken figure: a 5% lot with 8% chalk will not still be a 5% lot when it reaches your discharge port.

Buy IRRI-6 where volume and price decide and neither aroma nor grain length is being paid for — East and West African retail and institutional supply, Gulf catering and camp feeding, aid and relief tenders, and re-export blending. Kenya, Somalia, Madagascar, Mozambique and the West African coast are the established lanes and the reason Pakistani mills size their programmes around this variety. Against IR64 the difference is origin and availability rather than culinary: both are non-aromatic long grains in the same length band, and in a given week the better buy is simply whichever origin is priced better into your port. Where IRRI-6 does not belong is a retail pack competing on grain length or aroma — PK-386 is longer and carries slight aroma, and basmati is a different product entirely.
