IFO 380 Bunker Fuel

ISO 8217 RMG 380 marine residual fuel, HSFO & VLSFO

IFO 380 is intermediate fuel oil contracted against ISO 8217, most often as RMG 380: kinematic viscosity ≤ 380 cSt at 50°C, density at 15°C ≤ 991.0 kg/m³, water ≤ 0.5% v/v, ash ≤ 0.10%, flash point ≥ 60°C, aluminium plus silicon ≤ 60 mg/kg and CCAI ≤ 870. The number 380 is the viscosity, not the grade name — IFO 180 is the same family cut thinner. Sulphur is set by the regulation you are burning under, not by preference: ≤ 0.50% VLSFO for vessels operating on the IMO 2020 global cap without abatement, ≤ 0.10% inside ECAs, and HSFO at up to 3.50% only where a compliant scrubber is fitted and operating. CBIL arranges IFO 380 with SGS quantity and quality certification and MARPOL sample retention at delivery.

This is the grade you take when the fuel is going into a ship, and that is the whole distinction from M100 and D6: bunkers are contracted against ISO 8217 with an ISO 4259 precision regime, a MARPOL-compliant sampling procedure and a bunker delivery note, because a port state control inspection will ask for exactly those documents. A GOST-specified M100 or a loosely described D6 cargo does not carry them, however similar the burn characteristics look on paper. The parameters that cause real disputes are aluminium plus silicon — catalyst fines that destroy fuel pumps and liners — water content and off-spec density affecting purifier performance, so we specify the full ISO 8217 table rather than viscosity and sulphur alone. Supply is arranged on FOB and CIF terms by bunker barge and bulk tanker vessel at UAE and CIS supply points.

IFO 380 Bunker Fuel — buyer questions

VLSFO or HSFO — which do I need?

It is decided by your abatement, not your budget. Without a scrubber you burn VLSFO at ≤ 0.50% sulphur under the IMO 2020 global cap, and ≤ 0.10% inside an Emission Control Area. HSFO at up to 3.50% is only lawful where a compliant scrubber is fitted and operating. Burning HSFO without one is a port state control detention, so we will ask about your abatement before quoting.

What does the 380 in IFO 380 refer to?

Kinematic viscosity — a maximum of 380 cSt at 50°C. It is a viscosity figure, not a quality grade. IFO 180 is the same residual family cut to a lower viscosity, which some engines and smaller vessels prefer. Under ISO 8217 the equivalent designations are RMG 380 and RMG 180.

Why does aluminium plus silicon matter so much on a bunker spec?

Those are catalyst fines carried over from refinery cracking units, and they are abrasive. If the purifiers do not remove them they score fuel pumps, injectors and cylinder liners, and the repair bill dwarfs the fuel bill. ISO 8217 caps Al+Si at 60 mg/kg for RMG 380, and it is one of the parameters we certify rather than assume.

How is the bunker delivery documented?

SGS quantity and quality certification at delivery, MARPOL Annex VI representative samples retained and sealed at the receiving vessel's manifold, and a bunker delivery note issued to the ship. Those are the documents a port state control inspection asks for.
