Bitumen looks like a simple commodity — a black, viscous residue of crude oil refining — but sourcing it reliably is where most first-time buyers come unstuck. This guide covers what actually matters when you place an order.
Understand the grade you need
Bitumen is classified by how hard or soft it is. Two grading systems dominate international trade:
- Penetration grades — measured by how far a standard needle sinks into the sample at 25°C. Common grades are 60/70 and 80/100. Lower numbers are harder, suited to hotter climates and heavier traffic loads.
- Viscosity grades (VG) — VG-10, VG-30 and VG-40, defined by viscosity at 60°C. These are the standard in markets such as India.
Your local road authority specification dictates the grade. Ordering the wrong one is the single most common — and expensive — mistake.
The specifications that matter
A credible offer comes with a Certificate of Analysis covering at least:

Insist on independent inspection at load port — SGS or Intertek — rather than a refinery's own certificate alone.
Packaging changes the logistics
- New steel drums (150–180 kg) — flexible, easy to handle, ideal for smaller lots and difficult destinations.
- Jumbo/poly bags (~300 kg) — lower packaging cost, increasingly popular.
- Bulk (bitutainers or hot-bulk vessels) — most economical per tonne for large, regular volumes, but needs heating and specialist handling at discharge.
Incoterms decide what you actually pay
The headline price per tonne is meaningless without the term attached:
- FOB — you take the goods at the load port and arrange freight and insurance yourself.
- CFR — the seller covers freight to your port; insurance is on you.
- CIF — freight and insurance are included to the destination port.
For a buyer without an established freight desk, CIF removes the most variables. Compare offers on the same term, or you are not comparing like for like.
